If you explain Pranayama to people, make sure to set their expectations correctly. If a person does not do any spiritual work, lacks basic ethics, does not try to awake their consciousness, does not strengthen their imagination, etc., then they will perform it in a mechanical way. It might benefit their meditation, but only to a certain level. So they should not expect enlightenment or super Samadhis from it.
But it can be a good starting point, because we all start with our consciousness asleep and being mechanical. It is possible that those people see actual results from a Pranayama practice and then you can explain to them the other spiritual aspects, if they want to go deeper.

This was something I've wondered as well. Knowing how sexual transmutation is the basis of spirituality, I also have been tempted to explain pranayama and even the great arcanum to certain people who I know are seeking spiritually and can benefit from gnosis... Upon reading this post I'm inclined to ask a question on pranayama I've had as well, if the instructor managing this thread or another instructor doesn't mind: is there a pranayama that is especially powerful compared to other pranayamas? By this I mean is there such a practice or technique that transmutes more energy than most others? (for singles.)
It is hard to quantify the "strength" of a particular technique, maybe one day we will invent such measuring devices
A very good Pranayama practice, which combines many aspects, is Ham-Sah. Master Samael Aun Weor describes this practice in the following lecture:

Additionally, you might be interested in the course "Fuel for Spiritual Experience" and particularly in this lecture:
